Day Trips

The Parks Department offers a wide variety of trips for older adults and seniors. We utilize luxury motor coaches (with a restroom onboard) for all trips. Included in the registration fee for each trip is bus transportation, tour guide, and entry fees; lunch is included only when specified.  Register NOW by calling  454-7941, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  You may also register on-line by clicking the program number (e.g. #13356).    

Wildflowers, Winetasting & Window-Shopping – NEW!

The fun begins with a drive to Pinnacles National Park where we will enjoy a guided walk along a flat path in search of what should be an abundance of wildflowers following a very wet winter!  Next we will board the bus and travel to Pietra Santa, a mission-style winery offering panoramic views of the Cienega Valley and Gabilan Mountains.  During a guided tour, you will learn of the land’s growing history dating back to the 1850s, the San Andreas Fault’s effect on the soil and harvest quality, see the historic Dickenson House designed by an associate of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905 and learn about the state-of-the-art technology used in their winemaking methods - all the while tasting some award-winning wines!  Lastly, we will travel to San Juan Bautista, where you will have time for lunch on your own and other activities of your choosing.  The Old Mission, San Juan Bautista State Historic Park, other historical areas of interest, antique stores and other unique shops are all within walking distance.

Villa Montalvo Guided Tour & Downtown Los Gatos

Take a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the historic Montalvo Arts Center, also known as Villa Montalvo.  Learn about Senator James Duval Phelan’s favorite country home and former center of artistic, political and social life in Northern California.  Stroll through its stunning formal and informal gardens and discover how Montalvo has served the community as a hub for creativity for over 75 years. Before returning home, we’ll journey to Old Town Center in the heart of downtown Los Gatos for a unique and enjoyable shopping experience and lunch on your own.

Historic Downtown Sonora & Jamestown

Experience Sonora’s historic charm in the heart of Gold Country, strolling through specialty and antique shops nestled into buildings dating back to the 1800s.  Enjoy a meal on your own in one of the many fine restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops.  Take a self-guided historic walking tour and stop in to explore the Veterans Memorial Military Museum and the Sonora Fire Museum & Senior Lounge.  On our way home, we’ll stop at the Gianelli Vineyards tasting room in Jamestown, where you will be treated to tastings of award-winning wines! Rosie the Riveter by Land and Water

We will explore this historical park by land and water to fully appreciate its many facets. The journey begins with a narrated cruise aboard the River Dolphin investigating the Port of Richmond, old Kaiser Shipyards and surrounding busy waterfront, including a terrific look at the Albert Kahn designed Ford Motor Plant (used as a tank assembly plant during WWII). Lunch will be served on board and will include your choice of three tasty sandwiches, fresh fruit, Caesar salad, dessert and a non-alcoholic beverage.played in the World War II home front. *Please note: lunch is included in your registration fee.  

On land, we will be treated to a tour of the newly renovated visitor center at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, which commemorates a significant chapter in America’s history when American women, minorities and men worked toward a common goal. Through historic structures, museum collections, interpretive exhibits, and programs, the park tells of the significant and nationally recognized part that Richmond played in the World War II home front.

Summer Love ’n San Francisco

Kick off this year’s summer with a flashback to the past as you enjoy a guided tour of the de Young’s 50th anniversary celebration exhibition Summer of Love: Art, Fashion and Rock & Roll!  More than 300 significant cultural artifacts of the summer of 1967 will be on display, including iconic rock posters, photographs, interactive music and light shows, costumes and textiles, ephemera, and avant-garde films.  You are sure to be reminded that in a time of international upheaval, the city played a vital role in changing society and amplifying the pulse of the nation.  Next, you will have time to explore de Young’s impressive permanent collection and have lunch on your own.  

Later, walk or catch the bus over to the Conservatory of Flowers and get eye to eye with a butterfly in the Butterflies and Blooms exhibit.  Enjoy a beautiful and intimate cottage garden aflutter with hundreds of butterflies on the wing including monarchs, western swallowtails, painted ladies and more.  Walk along a wide variety of brightly colored blossoms likes zinnias and daisies while free-flying butterflies flit from flower to flower.  These goodwill ambassadors of the insect world provide a fascinating demonstration of plant pollination in action!

San Francisco Giants Game 

See the San Francisco Giants embark on what hopes to be another winning season. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, at AT&T Park watching the San Francisco Giants take on the Colorado Rockies (Section LB 127). Bring a friend or grandchild with you to enjoy this special day in the city.  Pack a lunch or grab a bite after we arrive at the park, where you will have a variety of food and beverage options to choose from. Discover Petaluma

Our adventure will begin at the Petaluma Wildlife & Natural Science Museum, where the impressive collection is only a component of the unique and enriching experience to be had. What began as a collection donated to a Petaluma High School teacher later blossomed into an innovative program that for over 20 years has empowered student docents who are responsible for animal care, museum maintenance, program development, and tour-conducting.  We will be treated to a student-led tour of the world-class 9,000 square foot wildlife museum that a community of volunteers, faculty and students have built and maintained.  

Next, we will board the bus and travel the short distance to the quaint downtown area of Petaluma where you will have time to do some exploring on your own.  There you will find many wonderful restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, specialty shops (including the Seed Bank, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company's only west coast location), historic architecture of many structures that survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum.

Chardonnay II Cruise

Join us for a 2-hour cruise aboard the beautiful 70’ sloop, Chardonnay II on Thursday, September 7, from 12:30-2:30 p.m.  This FREE event is made possible by the generosity of Chardonnay Sailing Charters. FDR’s Floating White House

Join us for a two-hour narrated cruise aboard the USS Potomac, also known as FDR's Floating White House.  Learn about the vessel’s history, from serving as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Presidential Yacht, to later belonging to Elvis Presley, to being seized, impounded and sunk after drug smugglers got their hands on her.  After a 12-year restoration period, the 165-foot-long vessel now serves as a memorial to the president who authored the New Deal and led the United States during the Great Depression and World War II years.  After the cruise you’ll have time for lunch on your own and browsing in Jack London Square.

Beach Blanket Babylon

Alameda Island & Oakland Estuary Cruise with Lunch

Join us for a narrated tour about and around the Oakland Estuary and Alameda Island.  We’ve all driven over the bridges from Oakland to Alameda, but how many have cruised under the Bay Bridge, entered the estuary, and continued down the east side of Alameda? This trip is truly a “back door view” of both Oakland and Alameda, and gives a good sense of the history as well as current usage of the estuary and Bay sides of this island.  Four bridges will be opened for us as we cruise down the estuary before/during lunch!  After passing through the last bridge we pop out into San Francisco Bay and head over towards San Francisco before starting our return journey home. There will be time to take a look at the City Front, Yerba Buena Island and its lighthouse, and more as we cruise back to Berkeley.

Local Brewry Cruz - NEW!

Brew Cruz Captain Annie Pautsch will board our bus and host a fun day of local microbrew touring and tastings.  In between pit stops at the breweries, she will educate us about beer and local brewery history.  Come full, pack a lunch or grab a bite at one of the stops.  This trip will include at least one tour and beer flight tastings at three Santa Cruz County breweries.  The day will end with an educational tour at one of our local treasures (TBD).

San Francisco Shopping, Sightseeing & Holiday Lights in the City Tour

Join us for a fun outing, beginning with an amazing shopping experience in downtown San Francisco. The bus will drop us off in the heart of Union Square, where you will be able to choose from a variety of stores and restaurants. If you like, you may choose to stay in one location and enjoy shopping at the Westfield San Francisco Centre. The Centre is home to the second largest Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s in the country as well as over 170 specialty stores and exclusive boutiques for an awe-inspiring blend of commerce, couture, cuisine and culture.  The fun only begins there!  After a day of shopping, a tour guide will meet us, board our bus, and narrate as we tour the city.  As darkness falls, we’ll be treated to views of holiday lights in San Francisco and even have the opportunity to disembark and have a closer look at some of the city’s best displays!

Christmas in the Adobes

Return to the days of Alta California and see Monterey’s historic adobes splendidly decorated for the season!  You will receive a program with a map to guide you as you stroll the streets of Historic Downtown Monterey, enjoying fandango dance lessons at the Custom House, bagpipes and shortbread cookies at Robert Louis Stevenson House, refreshments, games, history and more!  Bring a friend or grandchild with you to enjoy this festive event.  We will arrive in time for an early dinner on your own and browsing at Fisherman’s Wharf before the festivities begin at 5 PM.

Monterey Zoo & National Steinbeck Center

Did you know we have a zoo in our backyard?!  Tour this fascinating facility, formerly known as Wild Things, which is currently in the process of converting to a full-fledged zoo.  See the new enclosures that house professionally & humanely trained wild/exotic animals for film, television, live productions, education and much more as well as offer sanctuary to many rescued animals.  After visiting the lions, tigers, and other beautiful and intriguing animals, we’ll have an opportunity to feed carrots to a very grateful elephant!  After washing up, we’ll stop for lunch on your own nearby. 

Next, we’ll board the bus and travel to the National Steinbeck Center, which houses the largest collection of Steinbeck archives in the United States, with various exhibits on his body of work and philosophy. There is also a wing dedicated to the experiences of agricultural workers in the United States, a topic that Steinbeck was passionate about.  This will make for a great day with a friend and/or grandchild!
